Metrolink have announced that members of the Armed Forces will be able to travel for free on Armed Forces Day. The initiative by Transport for Greater Manchester extends to all current serving members of the Armed Forces as well as cadets and veterans.

The offer lasts for the full duration of Armed Forces Day, as well as Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. To receive free travel, the servicemen and women need to either be in uniform or carry their MOD90 or veteran badge.

Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday in June every year and provides an opportunity for the country to show their appreciation for those in the service, both past and present.

The national event moves around the country; in 2019 it will be in Salisbury and in 2020 it’s due to be held in Scarborough. However, there are regional celebrations too; anyone wanting to join in can check the local press for details about the events being held around the country.

The Armed Forces Day celebrations are a great way for the whole family to get involved, with activities for younger children as well as evening entertainment and performances for adult audiences. Parades, marches and even a flypast in some areas will all be included in the schedule for the day.

The tributes to the Armed Forces are a way to show support for the hard work they do as well as find out more about how they’re helping all around the world.

Free transport on Armed Forces Day

Transport for Greater Manchester is committed to supporting the Armed Forces community so all those actively associated with it, including cadets and veterans, will be able to enjoy free transport on Metrolink all day.

This Armed Forces offer is part of a national scheme being offered all around the country with transport providers allowing free travel for cadets, active servicemen and women plus veterans.

Metrolink has a long history of providing free services to Armed Forces personnel and even has a tram called “Lancashire Fusiliers” which has been in operation since 2006. Metrolink also supports the Poppy Appeal every year.

Free travel for the Armed Forces every day

Transport for Greater Manchester have a covenant in place to support the Armed Forces which sets out the support they will provide and their commitment to the community.

This covenant provides free travel for servicemen and women not only on the three special days each year, but also for all off-peak travel too. This means those carrying their MOD90 or veteran card can travel for free between 09.30am-midnight, Monday to Friday, and on weekends. Cadets wearing their uniform will also receive free travel during these times.
